Public Bus Schedules to Oliena Gateway

Standard public transit does not run directly into the valley. Visitors who rely on public buses must travel from regional hubs to the gateway town of Oliena. The regional transit company ARST (Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti) operates daily bus connections from the provincial capital of Nuoro to Oliena. Check the official routes and purchase bus tickets directly via the ARST Official Portal.

Upon arrival in Nuoro Stazione ARST, travelers can purchase physical bus tickets at the terminal station counter or at local tabacchi shops before boarding the vehicle. We recommend checking scheduled departures twenty-four hours before travel because holiday timetables vary.

Taxis and Private Chauffeur Transfers

Ridesharing services like Uber, Bolt, or Grab do not exist in central Sardinia. Tourists without a car must rely on local taxi networks or pre-booked chauffeur hires (Noleggio con Conducente - NCC). You can book taxis digitally using the itTaxi Application or the appTaxi System, both of which operate in Sardinian cities. For airport-to-valley transfers (such as from Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport), travelers use the pre-booking portal GetTransfer.com to secure fixed-rate 4WD transfers.

NCC and Local Taxi Agency Phone Numbers

Direct telephone lines for local dispatchers in Nuoro and Oliena are listed below. We recommend calling at least twenty-four hours in advance to coordinate pickups:

Standard taxi fares from Nuoro to the Oliena gateway range from €25.00 (~$27.25) to €40.00 (~$43.60) depending on traffic. Private 4WD transfers from Olbia Airport directly to Campo Base Lanaitho cost approximately €120.00 (~$130.80) to €150.00 (~$163.50) and demand advance reservation.

Driving Directions and Valley Tracks

To drive to the site from Oliena, follow the SP46 provincial road east for approximately 14 kilometers. Explicit green signs direct vehicles toward "Valle di Lanaitho". The final segment of this route transitions into a dry, unpaved gravel track, locally called a "strada bianca".

Standard two-wheel-drive passenger cars can cross this gravel track at low speeds. Sports cars with low ground clearance should not attempt this route because of deep ruts. If you plan to explore deeper tracks in the valley leading to the Tiscali trailhead, a high-clearance four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle is necessary. During rainy winter weeks, mud can make these tracks slippery and difficult for two-wheel-drive vehicles.

Airport Driving Routes

If you arrive by plane, three primary driving routes link the international airports to the Lanaitho Valley gateway:

Detailed Walkthrough of the Valley Dirt Road

Once you turn off the SP46 provincial road at the signed junction, the pavement ends immediately. You enter the dirt road that runs through the bottom of the Lanaitho Valley. This segment is roughly 4 kilometers long and leads directly to the Campo Base Lanaitho parking area. The path goes past centuries-old wild olive trees, limestone pastures, and rustic stone enclosures used by local shepherds.

Keep your speed below 20 kilometers per hour. This speed prevents dust clouds and protects the undercarriage of your vehicle from loose pebbles. You will cross several dry limestone wash beds. During heavy winter rains, these wash beds fill with water. This water turns the road into temporary streams. If you notice flowing water across the road, do not try to cross without a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle. During the main tourist season from April to October, the road remains dry and dusty.

From the free parking area at Campo Base, the cave entrance is accessible via a clearly marked pedestrian footpath. This walk is about 400 meters long. The path has some incline and crosses loose gravel. You need stable shoes for this walk. Directional wooden signs point directly to the cave gate, where the guides from Cooperativa Corrasi meet ticket holders.

⚠️ Roadside Parking Prohibition and Fines

Roadside parking along the narrow shoulders of the valley access routes is strictly prohibited. Municipal police officers regularly patrol these routes and issue immediate €100 fines to any vehicle parked past the white border lines. Roadside parking blocks emergency trucks and local transit. Visitors must park exclusively at the authorized free parking lot located at Campo Base Lanaitho. The ticket office is the primary place you should register at.

The valley has no cellular network connection. You must download your route guides and offline maps before leaving the town of Oliena. We recommend using GPX navigation apps to keep track of your coordinates.
